Preventing Needless Nephrectomies Possible

SAN FRANCISCO—Percutaneous image-guided renal mass biopsy (RMB) combined with immunohistochemical (IHC) results can accurately distinguish between benign and malignant tumors, a finding that could help prevent unnecessary nephrectomies, researchers reported at the 37th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Society of Interventional Radiology.

Repeat UTIs May Not Raise Kids’ CKD Risk

Although urinary tract infections (UTIs) in childhood are considered a risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD), a literature search revealed that in the absence of structural kidney abnormalities evident in imaging studies after the first UTI, the etiologic fraction of recurrent childhood UTIs as a main cause of CKD appears small, investigators reported in Pediatrics.
