A new study is suggesting that ciprofloxacin and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole are no longer appropriate choices for urinary tract infection (UTI) found in outpatients. The study suggests that safer antimicrobials for outpatient UTI are nitrofurantoin in patients without renal insufficiency and amoxicillin/clavulanate and third-generation cephalosporins for all others.
