Researchers at Monash University’s Immunology and Stem Cell Laboratories (MISCL) have shown that they can make human stem cells from healthy adult kidneys without working on human embryos, thus circumventing ethical concerns around this issue. John Schieszer reports in today’s Medical Minute that this research may soon lead to off-the-shelf mature kidney cells that can be used for drug testing and disease modeling.
