Researchers in academic settings often make the seminal discoveries from which industry develops useful medicines and medical devices, an enterprise requiring an investment of hundreds of millions of dollars with no guarantee of winning FDA approval.
Industry depends heavily on investigators at academic medical centers and elsewhere to conduct the requisite clinical trials but it is industry that is the driving force that brings drugs and devices to the market so they are available in clinical practice.
