Substance abuse disorders affect about 10% to 15% of physicians, a prevalence similar to that of the general population (JAMA;2005:293:1513-1515).

Some data suggest that self-reported substance abuse and dependence is most prevalence among psychiatrists and emergency physicians and lowest among surgeons.

The American Medical Association Code of Medical Ethics says physicians have an ethical obligation to report impaired, incompetent, and unethical colleagues. Virtually every state requires physicians to report impaired colleagues to the state medical board or a physician health program.
