A study presented at the recent American Transplant Congress showed that the cost of immunosuppressive drugs for transplant recipients has declined substantially, probably because of the introduction of generic versions of some of the drugs.

For kidney transplant recipients, the annual per-patient costs fell from $33,040 in 2007 to $18,746 in 2011, according to Roger W. Evans, PhD, of the United Network for the Recruitment of Transplantation Professionals in Rochester, Minn. Still, the cost of these drugs is high enough to be an important factor in patient non-adherence to therapy.
