Should terminally ill patients have the right to try experimental drugs?

Colorado recently became the first state to pass a law giving terminally ill patients the right to use experimental drugs.

The new law allows physicians and patients to collaborate to secure experimental drugs with the permission of pharmaceutical manufacturers.

Supporters of the bill have argued that the law would help patients avoid the long FDA drug approval process, but opponents point out that such laws circumvent the federal process of drug development, which is meant to ensure the safety of drugs.
