More and more hospitals are adding facility fees to patients’ bills. When hospitals acquire independent medical practices, they frequently reclassify those practices as outpatient facilities, which, under Medicare rules, allows hospitals to add a separate facility charge to bills, a practice that may greatly increase patients’ out-of-pocket expenses. Often, patients are unaware they will be hit with these charges.
