Various government regulations exist to manage pharmaceutical industry gifts and inducements to physicians. The goal is to decrease the influence that pharmaceutical marketing efforts have on physician prescribing practices. The Department of Health and Human Services, through its Office of the Inspector General (OIG), issued a compliance document on April 27, 2003, titled, OIG Compliance Program Guidance for Pharmaceutical Manufacturers. The document provides guidance related to kickbacks and other illegal remuneration, relationships with sales agents, drug samples, and other considerations.
