Recent studies provide persuasive evidence that the majority of small renal masses will grow slowly over time and that these masses are associated with a low risk of metastatic progression.

As a result, researchers have advanced the idea that active surveillance may be an option for select patients, providing them with a way to avoid treatment-related morbidity such as surgical complications and decreased renal function.
