In a recent article in Expert Review of Anti-infective Therapy (2012;10:1447-1455) titled “Prevention and management of hemodialysis catheter infections,” Venkat Ramanathan, MD, and Rabih O. Darouiche, MD, of the Renal Section at Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston noted that hemodialysis catheters are associated with bloodstream infections and that good personal hygiene, exit-site care with topical antibiotics, and antibiotic lock solution in dialysis catheters reduce the incidence of catheter infection.
