A recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine demonstrated that antibiotic treatment for more than seven days is no better than a shorter course of treatment at preventing early or late recurrence of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in male veterans.

In fact, the longer-duration regimen of antibiotics was associated with a significantly increased rate of late recurrence. The researchers noted that the optimal treatment duration and current treatment patterns for UTIs in male patients are unknown.
