All doctors want to do the best for their patients, and make every effort to keep abreast of the latest developments in their specialty by reading the peer-reviewed literature and participating in continuing medical education activities.

But patients may have doubts about whether their doctor has diagnosed them properly or has prescribed the most appropriate treatment, and thus may seek a second opinion. Some patients might not mention this to their doctor out of fear of insulting him or her.
