The U.S. Surgeon General, the federal government’s leading spokesperson on public health matters, is the operational head of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, which comprises about 6,800 uniformed health officers.

The nation currently has an Acting Surgeon General, Rear Admiral Boris D. Lushniak, MD, MPH, who has been in that post since July 17, 2013, a day after Surgeon General Regina Benjamin resigned.
