A 2011 Massachusetts Medical Society survey of physicians in the commonwealth found that 51% of internists and 53% of family physicians are not accepting new patients.

The survey found that access to specialists is easier than primary care doctors, with and 97% of orthopedic surgeons, 82% of cardiologists, 85% of obstetricians/gynecologists, 95% of gastroenterologists accepting new patients. The survey found longer patient wait times and gaps in physician acceptance of government health coverage.
