Doctors might tell a “white lie” to a patient to couch a poor prognosis.
Physicians frequently have to deliver bad news to patients with a poor prognosis. For example, patients with metastatic cancer or some other fatal illness may want to know how long they have to live. Although physicians are morally and ethically obligated to be completely honest with patients, physicians might be inclined to tell a “white lie” and couch a prognosis in way that engenders optimism out of sensitivity and concern for patients’ mental health.
