Depending on where they practice, doctors may be at a big disadvantage when negotiating payment rates with private insurers.
Private insurers in some places provide coverage for such a big chunk of the population they can have the upper hand in negotiations.
Doctors may feel they have little choice but to accept payments lower than they think is fair for the services they provide.
Some private payers might reimburse so poorly, however, that doctors may decide they are better off not accepting their insurance.
