Anxiety and depression are common among hemodialysis patients and they are associated with increased morbidities.

For example, a recent study published online ahead of print in the Journal of Renal Nutrition found that anxiety and depression are associated with impaired physical performance in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients.

The study, by Min Zhang, MD, and colleagues, compared 72 relatively health MHD patients with 39 normal adults. Anxiety and depression were present in 45% and 32% of the MHD patients, respectively, compared with 2.5% and 5% of the normal patients.
