From a clinical standpoint, infants and toddlers make up a special group of patients. They are not miniature adults. Anatomic structures often are not fully developed. Organ function and metabolic processes in infants and toddlers frequently differ from those of adults. Dosing medications often can be challenging, and laboratory tests may need to be interpreted differently because normal ranges in adults may not be the same in infants and toddlers.
