Rising rates of antimicrobial resistance have led to warnings about the inappropriate use of antibiotics. Infectious disease specialists and others have offered strategies to address this problem. For example, they recommend that clinicians keep abreast of the bacterial resistance patterns in their area and prescribe antibiotics accordingly. They also have cautioned against prescribing antibiotics for inappropriate indications, such as colds and other viral infections.
