A new meta-analysis published online ahead of print in the American Journal of Therapeutics found that the patients treated with statins prior to interventional procedures requiring administration of iodinated contrast media have a significant 55% decreased odds of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN).

The meta-analysis, by Alexandros Briasoulis, MD, PhD, of Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center, and colleagues, included 9 prospective randomized trials of high-dose statin treatment compared with placebo for CIN prevention in a total of 2,480 statin recipients and 2,504 controls.
