Vitamin E-coated dialysis membranes (VECMs) may improve outcomes in hemodialysis patients, Italian researchers reported in the International Journal of Artificial Organs (2008;31:545-552).

 

They switched 172 patients from their previous dialyzer to VECMs for 12 months. After 12 months, hemoglobin levels rose significantly from 10.9 g/dL at baseline to 11.7 g/dL; erythropoietin requirement decreased from 7,762 IU/week to 6,390 IU/week.
