Bacteremia in adult patients with a urinary tract infection (UTI) is associated with certain abnormal findings on computed tomography (CT), according to a recent study.
In a study of 189 adult UTI patients who underwent CT scans within 24 hours after hospital admission, investigators at Wonkwang University College of Medicine in South Korea, identified concurrent bacteremia in 40.2%. Abnormal CT findings were present in 96.3% of the patients, and 62.4% had 2 or more abnormal findings. In multivariable analysis, the presence of 2 or more abnormal CT findings was associated with 2.1-fold increased odds of bacteremia, investigators reported online in the European Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Hydronephrosis was associated with 12-fold increased odds.
“Physicians should be aware that appropriate early management is necessary to prevent fatality in patients with these CT findings,” the investigators concluded.
