Early salvage radiotherapy (eSRT) following biochemical recurrence of prostate cancer following radical prostatectomy (RP) leads to excellent cancer control, researchers reported online ahead of print in European Urology.
Alberto Briganti, MD, of Vita Salute San Raffaele University, San Raffaele Scientific Institute, Milan, Italy, and colleagues studied 472 node-negative patients who experienced biochemical recurrence (BCR) after RP. All patients underwent eSRT, defined as local radiation to the prostate and seminal vesicle bed delivered when PSA levels were 0.5 ng/mL or lower. BCR after eSRT was defined as two consecutive PSA values of 0.2 ng/mL or higher. The mean and median follow-up was 58 and 48 months, respectively. The overall five-year BCR-free survival rate after eSRT was 73.4%. In multivariable analysis, pathologic stage, Gleason score, positive surgical margins, pre-eSRT PSA level were significantly associated with BCR after eSRT, according to the investigators.
