Robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) and open radical prostatectomy (ORP) are associated with low rates of bladder neck contracture (BNC), according to investigators.
A team led by Benjamin N. Breyer, MD, of the University of California-San Francisco studied 988 prostate cancer patients who underwent radical prostatectomy (RP) from 2002 to 2008 and had at least 12 months of follow-up. In this group, 293 men underwent RALP and 695 men underwent ORP. Subjects had a mean age of 59 years and 91% of them were Caucasian.
Twenty-two BNC cases (2.2%) occurred in the 988 RP patients, four in the RALP group (1.4%) and 18 in the ORP group (2.6%), a nonsignificant difference between the groups, researchers reported in BJU International (published online ahead of print). Eighteen months post-operatively, the BNC-free rate was 99% and 97% for the RALP and ORP groups, respectively.
