Adjuvant or salvage radiotherapy followingradical prostatectomy (RP) mayincrease the likelihood of overactive bladder (OAB), according to study findingspublished online ahead of print inUrology.

In a study of 875 men who underwentopen RP, Gregory W. Hosier, MD,and colleagues at Dalhousie Universityin Halifax, Nova Scotia, de novo OAB —defined as urgency with or withoutfrequency and nocturia — developed in19% of patients. Those who underwentsubsequent radiotherapy had anearly 5.6-fold increased relative riskof de novo OAB, after adjusting forage, body mass index, smoking status,cancer stage, and nerve-sparingstatus, Dr Hosier’s team reported.
