Percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation may be considered an alternative treatment for overactive bladder (OAB), researchers reported in the Journal of Urology (2009;182:1055-1061).
Kenneth M. Peters, MD, of William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich., and colleagues randomly assigned 100 adult OAB patients to receive weekly percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation or 4 mg daily extended-release tolterodine for 12 weeks.
Nearly 80% of the nerve-stimulation group reported cure or improvement versus 55% of tolerodine recipients. Objective measures improved similarly in both groups.
