Sleep posture may play a causative role in promoting renal stones, Iranian investigators reported in the Scandinavian Journal of Urology and Nephrology (2008; 42:551-554).

In a study, 15 (88%) of 17 patients who had recurrent right kidney stones had right-side-down sleep posture and 13 (61.9%) of 21 patients with recurrent left kidney stones had left-side-down sleep posture.

The association between lateral sleep posture and ipsilateral kidney stone formation was significant, the authors concluded.
