The incidence of kidney stones in patients following kidney transplantation is estimated to be 1%, according to a new systematic review and meta-analysis of 21 studies with 64,416 kidney transplant recipients.

The mean time to diagnosis of kidney stones after transplantation was 28 months, Wisit Cheungpasitporn, MD, of Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and colleagues reported in the World Journal of Transplantation (2016;6:790-797). Calcium-based stones were the most common type of stone (67% of cases), followed by struvite stones (20%), and uric acid stones (13%).

“These findings may impact clinical prevention and management of kidney stones in kidney transplant recipients,” the researchers concluded.
