Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) in transplanted kidneys is safe and effective, according to a report in The Journal of Urology (2008; published online ahead of print).

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., studied 13 patients who had a stone in a transplanted kidney and underwent PNL.

All patients were rendered stone-free with minimal postoperative complications. At long-term follow-up, stone recurrences were few and graft function was stable after the procedure.
