High fluid intake decreases the risk of recurrent nephrolithiasis, according to a meta-analysis of eight trials involving 1,855 subjects.

Water intake greater than 2 L/day or enough fluids to achieve a urine output greater than 2.5 L/ day reduced stone recurrence risk by 61%, researchers reported in European Urology (2009; published online ahead of print).

In addition, reduced soft-drink intake lowered renal colic risk in patients with high baseline soft-drink consumption.
