Patients with these risk factors should be followed up for the rest of their lives, according to the researchers.
Researchers have identified identifiedrisk factors for the late post-nephrectomyrecurrence of localized renal cellcarcinoma (RCC).
These factors include patient age 60years or greater, Fuhrman grade 3 or4, and pathologic stage pT2 or higher,according to study findings publishedonline ahead of print in Cancer Researchand Treatment.
“We propose that patients with theserisk factors should be followed up forthe rest of their lives,” concluded a teamled by Seung Hyun Jeon, MD, PhD, ofKyung Hee University Medical Centerin Seoul, Korea.

The study included 225 patients whounderwent nephrectomy for localizedRCC and had a minimum recurrence-freesurvival of 5 years. Patients whoexperienced recurrence beyond 5 yearsafter nephrectomy were considered a laterecurrence group. Of the 225 patients,14 experienced late recurrence.
