Renal Cell Carcinoma Type Linked to Time on Dialysis

The histologic type of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) arising in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) may be related to the time on dialysis, according to a study.

Investigators analyzed paraffin-embedded tissue specimens from 27 ESRD patients who underwent radical nephrectomy for RCC. Conventional clear-cell RCC was the predominant histologic type in patients with a dialysis duration of less than 10 years (nine of 15 patients), whereas RCC associated with acquired cystic disease predominated in those on dialysis for 10 or more years (seven of 12 patients), investigators reported in BJU International (2010; published online ahead of print).

The researchers, led by Yoshiyuki Kakehi, MD, of Kagawa University Faculty of Medicine in Kagawa, Japan, also identified sarcomatoid foci in three patients with a dialysis duration of 10 or more years.
