Black patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) are 50% less likely to have a nephrectomy than their white counterparts, but the two races have similar overall survival, researchers concluded in BJU International (2009;103:889-893).

The findings are based on a study of U.S. data from 12,516 patients treated for RCC between 2000 and 2004. The investigators noted that race might be a proxy of comorbidity and life expectancy, “which represent surgical selection criteria for nephrectomy.”
