The most common types of benign pathology were oncocytoma, angiomyolipoma, and complex cysts.
Approximately 1 in 7 patients who undergo partial nephrectomy (PN) for presumed renal cell carcinoma (RCC) have benign histology, a study found.
In a series of 916 patients who underwent PN for renal masses from 2007 to 2015, 129 (14.1%) had a final diagnosis of benign disease, Tyler Marques Bauman, BS, and colleagues at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, reported online ahead of print in the Journal of Endourology. The most common types of benign pathology were oncocytoma (66 patients, 51.2%), angiomyolipoma (37 patients, 28.7%), and complex cysts (10 patients, 7.8%). In multivariate analysis, low body mass index, low R.E.N.A.L. score, and low preoperative creatinine predicted benign histology, according to the investigators.
