Ji Hoon Ahn, MD, and colleagues at Chonnam National University Medical School in Gwangju, Korea, reviewed data from 645 patients with NMIBC. Patients with diabetes mellitus had a significant 42% increased risk of recurrence and 79% increased risk of progression, the investigators reported in the Journal of Korean Medical Science (2016;31:1464-1471). Among patients with diabetes mellitus, those with preoperative and postoperative HbA1c values of 7% or higher had 2.6 and 2.4 times increased odds of progression compared with those who had lower values. Metformin use was not associated with recurrence or progression.
The investigators concluded that “tight glycemic control and close follow-up for bladder tumor may be beneficial in patients with poor glycemic control.”
