(HealthDay News) — Significant change is seen in symptom scores and maximum urinary flow for sham controlled endoscopic and injection benign prostatic hyperplasia interventions, according to a review published in The Journal of Urology.
Charles Welliver, MD, from Albany Medical College in New York, and colleagues conducted a systematic review of the literature to identify randomized controlled trials involving endoscopic or intraprostatic injection benign prostatic hyperplasia treatments that included a sham surgical arm. Data were included for 14 randomized controlled trials.
The researchers identified an average decrease of 27% (from 22.3 to 16.7) in the American Urological Association Symptom Score (AUASS) 3 months after a sham endoscopic procedure (P = 0.0003). At 3 months there was an increase in maximum urinary flow of 1.3 ml per second (14%; P = 0.001). Prostate injection-based studies were similar at 3 months, with a 26% decrease in AUASS (from 21.3 to 15.7; P < 0.001) and a 2.0 ml increase in maximum urinary flow per second (23%; P = 0.043).
“Sham controlled endoscopic and injection benign prostatic hyperplasia interventions demonstrate a considerable and statistically significant change in symptom scores and maximum urinary flow, which is comparable to the response seen in medication trials,” the authors write.
