Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) is a safe alternative to transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) for patients on oral anticoagulation (OA) therapy, researchers reported in the Journal of Endourology (2009; published online ahead of print).
They studied 76 HoLEP patients, of whom 39 were on OA and 37 were not (controls). Intraoperative hematuria occurred in 8% of OA patients and 14% of controls, a nonsignificant difference between the groups. No patient required a blood transfusion.
