Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) has no effect on overall sexual function, according to a new study.
Sung Han Kim, MD, of the National Cancer Center in Goyang, Korea, and colleagues prospectively enrolled 60 sexually active BPH patients undergoing HoLEP. The men completed the Male Sexual health Questionnaire (MSHQ) for the evaluation of their overall sexual function and the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) questionnaire for the pre- and post-operative 6-month evaluation of voiding symptoms.
Among the subdomains of the MSHQ, postoperative sexual function—including erection, ejaculation, sexual satisfaction, anxiety or sexual desire—did not change significantly following HoLEP, although satisfaction scores decreased slightly because of retrograde ejaculation in 38 patients (63.3%), the investigators reported online ahead of print in the Asian Journal of Andrology. Sexual satisfaction improved significantly and was correlated with improvements of all lower urinary tract symptoms and quality of life domains in the IPSS questionnaire after surgery.
