GreenLight HPS Laser Found Safe and Effective for BPH

A short-term follow-up study shows that GreenLight HPS laser photoselective vaporization prostatectomy (PVP) is safe and effective for treating lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), according to a report in the Journal of Endourology (2008;22:2341-2347).

The study, led by Carson Wong, MD, and colleagues at The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City, included 70 men (median age 67 years; median prostate volume 61.6 mL) who underwent the procedure as outpatients.

Mean laser and operative times were 13 and 30 minutes. Forty-nine patients (70%) were catheter-free at discharge. The median American Urological Association Symptom Score decreased from 22 at baseline to 4 at 52 weeks postoperatively. The median peak flow rate increased from 9.4 mL/sec at baseline to 20.0 mL/sec at 52 weeks. The researchers observed no urethral strictures or urinary incontinence.
