Neither drug decreased operative time, prostate volume, or weight of gland resected.
Pretreatment with finasteride, but notdutasteride, appears to decreaseperioperative blood loss related totransurethral resection of the prostate(TURP) in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), Chinese researchersconcluded in a paper published inBMC Urology (2015;15:47).
In a meta-analysis of 17 randomizedcontrolled trials that included1,489 patients, Yi-Ping Zhu, MD, andcolleagues at Fudan University inShanghai also found that finasteridecan decrease blood loss per gram ofresected tissue, microvessel density(MVD), and vascular endothelialgrowth factor level. Pre-TURP dutasteridedid not decrease total bloodloss or MVD. Neither drug decreasedoperative time, prostate volume, orweight of gland resected.
