Use of prescription non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is associated with an increased risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), according to study findings published online in The Prostate.
The population-based study, led by Teemu J. Murtola, MD, of the University of Tampere, Tampere, Finland, included 74,754 Finnish men without previous BPH at baseline in 1996–1999. Of these, 57,707 (77.2%) used prescription NSAIDs. NSAID users had a 2-fold increased risk of BPH medication use, 59% increased risk of a recorded BPH diagnosis, and 61% increased risk for BPH surgery compared with non-users.
