Kamyar Kalantar-Zadeh, MD, MPH, PhD, of the University of California Irvine Medical Center, and medical director for nephrology at Renal & Urology News, has been named the world’s top-ranked expert in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) by Expertscape.
Expertscape uses “objective algorithms” to identify the most experienced doctors and medical institutions across 26,000 topics in medicine.

Carmine Zoccali, MD, of Ospedali Riuniti Reggio Calabria, Italy, Peter Stenvinkel of Karolinska Institutions in Stockholm, Marcello Tonelli, MD, of the University of Alberta in Edmonton, and Glenn Chertow, MD, of Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., were ranked no. 2, 3, 4, and 5, respectively.
Expertscape also ranked the top institutions in the treatment of ESRD. The top ranked institution was the University of California Los Angeles, followed by the University of Toronto, the University of California San Francisco, Karolinska Institutions, and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
