Patients do not appear to be burdened by clean intermittent self-catheterization (CISC), according to researchers in Switzerland.
Thomas M. Kessler, MD, and his colleagues at the University of Bern sent survey questionnaires to 101 patients performing CISC because of voiding dysfunction. Ninety-two patients (91%) responded. The mean time over which CISC was performed was five years. The mean frequency of CISC per day was three times.

Seventy-two patients (78%) perceived CISC as easy or very easy, and 76 patients (82.6%) said CISC did not interfere at all or interfered a little bit with work or other regular daily activities. In addition, 80 patients (87%) reported no or minimal pain while performing CISC; 56 patients (61%) reported an improved quality of life (QOL) due to CISC, and 11 (12%) reported deterioration in QOL.
