Physician-diagnosed prostatitis is associated with 2.4-fold increased risk of a later diagnosis of BPH and a 70% increased risk of requiring later treatment for that condition, according to a study published in Urology (2008;71:475-479).
Prostatitis also was associated with nonsignificant 33% increased risk of acute urinary retention.
The findings, by Jennifer L. St. Sauver, PhD, of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and her colleagues, come from a longitudinal population-based study of 2,447 men living in Olmsted County, Minnesota.
