Investigators have found what may be an association between renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and multiple myeloma (MM).
The team, led by Mohamad A. Hussein, MD, of the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer and Research Institute in Tampa, Fla., reviewed the records of patients with RCC and MM at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio between 1990 and 2005 and identified 2,704 patients with RCC, 1,100 with MM, and eight with both malignancies.

In four of these patients, RCC was diagnosed after MM at three, eight, 23, and 46 months. In the other four, RCC was diagnosed before MM at one, 13, 35, and 108 months. The number of RCC cases expected in the 1,100 patients with MM over 15 years was lower than the four recorded.
Similarly, the number of MM cases expected in the 2,704 RCC patients was lower than the four recorded, researchers reported in BJU International (2008; 101:712-715).
