SAN FRANCISCO—Statin use may decrease the likelihood that superficial bladder cancer will progress to muscle-invasive disease requiring cystectomy, according to researchers at the University Hospital of Montreal in Canada.

 

They studied 4,834 patients who had superficial bladder cancer and transurethral resection of tumor procedure. Of the 4,834 patients, 1,211 (25%) were statin users.

Statin use did not affect cancer recurrence, but it was associated with a 42% decreased risk of progression to cystectomy for muscle-invasive disease and a 46% decrease in death risk from any cause.

 

Findings were reported here at the 2008 Genitourinary Cancers Symposium.
