New-onset diabetes mellitus (NODM) in renal transplant recipients may accelerate arterial stiffening, thus contributing to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, German researchers reported in Transplant International (2008; 21:930-935).

In a study of 318 renal transplant patients (57 with NODM and 261 without), investigators at University Duisburg-Essen found that pulse wave velocity was significantly greater in patients with NODM (10.5 vs. 8.7 m/sec).
