Reduced circulating levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 (IL-10) are significantly associated with poor sleep quality in hemodialysis (HD) patients, according to a study published online ahead of print in Hemodialysis International.
Simin Dashti-Khavidaki, PharmD, and colleagues at Tehran University in Iran studied 72 patients on maintenance HD. Of these, 54 (75%) were identified as poor sleepers and the rest were considered good sleepers. The poor sleepers had significantly lower levels of IL-10 and higher levels of serum triglyceride and parathyroid hormone.
