Aerobic exercise training could be a practical means of preventing erectile dysfunction (ED) brought on by a Western diet, Christopher J. Wingard, PhD, and colleagues reported online in the American Journal of Physiology: Regulatory, Integrative, and Comparative Physiology. 

In rats fed a Western diet containing high levels of saturated fat, omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, and added sugar for 12 weeks, those that ran on a treadmill five days a week maintained erectile function, as measured by electrical stimulation of the anesthetized animals’ cavernosal nerve. 

Other rats fed the same diet without exercising exhibited ED.
